Packing Boxes

A coworker turned in her two-weeks notice on Monday. The amount of travel that her job required was too much for her and her family. However, today she was told that she should update others on her projects and that she should leave at lunch today. She turned in her work cell phone, her laptop, and company credit card and left at noon. It was a very odd situation.

At my last job as an editor for an education publishing company, there were a lot of layoffs a couple of months after I left. People were not given any notice, only a phone call, a box and an escort out of the building from HR. Of the 14 people in my old department, two are left. I am happy that I decided to leave when I did.

In these difficult economic times, I know that there are several people in the same situation. I am thankful that my job seems secure at this writing. However, there will be financial planning in the next few months to make sure that everything will be ok if the unexpected should happen.

  1. None of this surprises me and I think it's sad that it doesn't. Been there & seen it. This has been pretty prevalent in many businesses for awhile now. The employee seemingly matters little.
