Food, Inc.

"Variety accredits the film with doing “for the supermarket what ‘Jaws’ did for the beach.”

Despite reading this blurb from the RiverRun Web site, Joe and I went to see Food, Inc. this morning. I was a vegetarian for about 6 months in 2008. It was a health choice but I actually gained weight and became anemic. The "benefits" were not what I expected.

This film showed how the food industry has changed in the last 30 years. The mistreatment of animals, the chemicals that are used to increase food production, and the lack of responsibility of the FDA. There were several times in the film where I had to close my eyes because the images on the screen were so disturbing. These are the images that I do not see when the food that I eat is in pretty packages in the grocery store. The film made me more aware and will make me read labels and buy locally.

After the film was over, a woman who was sitting behind me said to her friend, "Amazingly, right now I am starving, and that's tragic."

Indeed.
