The City Council is soliciting citizen suggestions for a city slogan that, among other uses, would be displayed under the N.C. DOT’s “Welcome to Winston-Salem” signs on major roads and highways.
Citizens with a suggestion can submit by phone or internet between March 31 and April 4.
Citizens can suggest a motto already in use or submit an original proposal. Proposals should be submitted online at CityofWS.org or phoned into to the citizen feedback line, 734-1400.
The following input is from JD Wilson, CEO of Excalibur Enterprises and supporter of the City of Arts and Innovation.
"It involved more than a... year's worth of work, meetings, debates and conscientious effort to reach consensus. It was a proactive effort by community, civic, corporate and political leadership to help the City fill a void and at no expense to the taxpayers.
"Because it was such an inclusive and collaborative community effort, it has been adopted and used widely. In fact, the Piedmont Triad Research Park changed its name and included "innovation" in it-- Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. And creative entities are being attracted to the Bailey Power Plant (SciWorks and UNCSA's Community Music School and Community Dance School and a black box theatre). So, we're seeing the blending of arts and innovation in our community which is a powerful story to share with the outside world. Of course, a leading organization that in itself is a great combination of arts and innovation--CDI--is building its home there, a collaboration of WSSU, UNCSA and Forsyth Tech.
"I could go on and on as to why this professionally developed brand (that normally would cost upwards of $50,000) already is a successful one that's attracting people to our city. If the City feels a need to officially embrace a publicly- created brand, it should endorse City of Arts & Innovation."
I couldn't agree more. Please support making The City of Arts & Innovation our "official" slogan for Winston-Salem. It speaks to our past, present and future of our city.
